Scripture repeatedly calls us to care for the widows, orphans and the strangers.  Who are these people in our world today?  What does my faith say about my relationship with them?

Below are three quotes from our Bishops and Popes regarding Catholic social teaching and our call to work for justice.

"Love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to her (the Church) as the ministry of the sacraments and preaching of the Gospel.  The Church cannot neglect the service of charity any more than she can neglect the Sacraments and the Word."
Pope Benedict XVI, God is Love Encyclical

"Far too many Catholics are unfamiliar with the basic content of Catholic social teaching.  More fundamentally, many Catholics do not adequately understand that the social mission of the Church is an essential part of the Catholic faith."
Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions, United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, 1998

"The central message is simple; our faith is profoundly social.  We cannot be called truly Catholic unless we hear and heed the Church's call to serve those in need and work for justice and peace."
Communities of Salt and Light, United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, 1993

The above quotes are only three of many quotes from our Church leaders regarding the necessity to know our Church's teachings and to act to bring about God's reign.  Catholic social teaching is an "essential part of the Catholic faith" not a fringe idea.  Pope Benedict states we simply cannot neglect the poor since the service of charity is as essential as the Sacraments and the Word.  If any of these statements surprise you - then please consider joining a JustFaith group this Fall.

An informational meeting will be held at St. Pius, Farrell Hall, on Thursday, July 22, from 7 - 8:00 pm.  Bring your family, your friends - organize a group, join a group.  Get excited about learning what our Church teaches on the social mission of our Church.  Hope to see all of you there!
